SEO, AEO & GEO: The Complete Beginner's Guide
Most founders think SEO means ranking on Google. In 2026, that is only one-third of the equation. This guide covers all 3 layers (SEO, AEO, and GEO) with step-by-step instructions based on real audits of 2 websites.

A practical framework for founders and teams who want their website found by Google, Bing, and AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
If you have a website and never optimized it for search, or spent 10 minutes on it and have no idea if it works, this guide is for you.
We audited two real websites (natyshi.xyz and esembee.com) and documented every step: the mistakes, the fixes, and the results. Here is the framework distilled into its essential parts. This fed our AI agents to run SEP/GEO/AEO assessments and improvements to run in our websites and third party one that we develop.
The Three Layers of Modern Search
Most people think of SEO as one thing. In 2026, it is three:
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Can Google and Bing find your website and rank it in classic search results?
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): Can machines like ChatGPT and Perplexity extract a clean, citable answer from your page?
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): Do LLMs choose your brand as a source when generating responses?
Here is the priority: start with SEO. Without it, AEO and GEO will not work. But SEO alone is no longer enough. You need all three.
The data point that changes everything: A study of 248,000 Reddit posts found that AI engines cite sources that differ from Google's top 10 by 73%. Ranking #1 on Google does NOT guarantee ChatGPT will mention you.
What You Need (Tools)
Every tool in this framework is free or has a free tier sufficient for small teams:
- Google Search Console: Track indexing, impressions, clicks, and queries
- Google Analytics 4: Measure organic traffic and engaged sessions
- Screaming Frog: Crawl your site for technical issues (free up to 500 URLs)
- llm.txt: A new file you add to your site telling AI crawlers what to cite
Phase 0: Establish Your Baseline
Before changing anything, document where you are today. This is your reference line for measuring progress.
Google Search Console:
- Pages indexed vs. pages not indexed
- Total impressions and clicks (last 3 months)
- Top 5 queries and top 5 pages
Google Analytics 4:
- Active users (28 days)
- Organic sessions and percentage of total traffic
- Engaged sessions
Screaming Frog crawl:
- Unique titles (under 60 characters)
- Unique meta descriptions (under 160 characters)
- H1 tags: one per page, descriptive
- Image alt text coverage
- Internal linking structure
